It's hard to argue against the need for human beings to get regular, structured exercise. There are mountains of both anecdotal and scientific evidence to support this idea. It makes sense too – especially if you just think about it this way. The human body is nothing more than a biological machine, not so different from any of the mechanical machines most of us are so familiar with and use daily that make our modern life much less burdensome.
If you have ever had a bicycle or any other kind of machine that was stored, unused for an extended period of time, you will notice that parts are seized and rusted. Well, the human body reacts exactly the same way when it is kept inactive for a long time. Joints get rusty and have difficulty moving. Muscles get stiff and weak. Bones get soft and brittle. And that's just the start. The heart and lungs lose capacity and can't process as much blood and oxygen. The metabolism slows causing other organs and systems to operate inefficiently. The body begins to store fat due to the slower metabolism.
So it shouldn't be a surprise that all of us need to follow an exercise program, in order to remain healthy. A healthy nutritional plan should be the first (and most important) element of a healthy lifestyle and by itself will go a long way in helping you to achieve and maintain a healthy body. However, no healthy lifestyle would be complete without an exercise plan too.
Listed below, you will find several more excellent reasons why you should begin exercising now.
1. Disease Prevention
In my opinion, this is by far the greatest benefit of exercising. It is a proven fact that the chances of developing several various diseases decrease with exercise. These diseases include stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Everyone knows that diabetes increases the chance of heart attacks and strokes. It has been estimated that 4 out of 5 deaths caused by heart disease and cancer, are linked to factors that include lack of exercise and increased stress. This clearly indicates that many of the risk factors and diseases linked to inactivity are also working hand-in-hand to damage your health. The best-known way to prevent this from happening – start exercising.
2. Disease Remission and/or Eradication
There is a host of severe and minor diseases that can be improved, even healed through regular exercise. This list includes stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Following a regular exercise plan, you can also decrease high blood pressure, HDL (the “bad” cholesterol) cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels as well.
Regular exercise has also been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men, breast and uterine cancer in women, and much, much more. This has all been scientifically proven, so what are you waiting for? Start exercising today.
3. Better Manage Body Composition & Enhanced Fat Loss
This is another aspect of the benefits of regular exercise. Study after study has confirmed, after years of scientific research from every corner of the world, that physical exercise enhances weight loss. The key is to burn more calories than you consume through nutrition – this results in weight loss. Exercise increases the number of calories you burn as compared to when you don't exercise. It's really simple - more exercise = more weight and/or fat loss.
4. Enhanced Sense of Well-being (Improved State of Mind)
The body has been shown to produce chemicals to fight depression. These chemicals work by making you “feel happy”. Scientific studies prove that regular exercise leads to an increased release of these “feel good” chemicals known as endorphins in the body. Those same studies also measured the speed at which the body released these endorphins and they found that it can begin as quickly as a mere 12 minutes into a workout.
Another chemical known to increase during and after a workout is serotonin. Increased levels of serotonin in the central nervous system have been associated with feelings of well being and decreased mental depression. The chemical is better known as a sleep aid, which is also of benefit to you – a good night's rest allows the body to regenerate and rebuild.
5. Increased Productivity and Stamina
Being fit means you will have more energy and you may even notice your overall mood is improved. More energy can help you be more productive at home and at work. You might find that you can stretch beyond your previously known limits and perhaps realize that you can do more than you thought possible. Increased focus and a new sense of purpose will keep you on track to achieving your goals and aiming even higher.
6. Increased Self Esteem
Regular physical exercise can boost your self-esteem. You will look and feel better, have more self-confidence and just be more comfortable overall. Becoming more active will help you meet new people, preventing any feelings of isolation or loneliness. Exercise can even work to increase your interests in sex, which certainly could mean improved relationships.
It seems very clear that the benefits of exercise are numerous and varied. More importantly, an exercise routine doesn't have to be complicated or require long hours of pumping iron at the gym. The choices are even more numerous and varied as the benefits. Weightlifting, Jogging, Cycling, Water Sports, Martial Arts, Yoga, and my favorite Walking. Yes, the simple activity we all do every day can be just as beneficial as weightlifting. All that's required is any activity that increases the heart rate will provide benefit to you.
Armed with this knowledge you now have no excuse, so get to exercising. At home or at the gym, it doesn't matter. Experts recommend that just 20 minutes to 30 minutes, 3 times a week is all that's necessary to derive the full benefits of an exercise routine.
Invest a little time daily in yourself and your health by exercising, the rewards for you – look & feel better than ever before.
Your body will thank you.

Christopher Gibson
